Science, Education, and Character: Reflections on the First Fifty Years of the Peabody Museum, 1866-1916

The Peabody Museum was founded one year after the Civil War ended. In the chaotic decades following the war, museums held the promise of teaching not only scientific facts, but proper values as well; a museum of anthropology might serve a vital moral function in the emerging society. In this lecture historian Curtis Hinsley will consider the hopes and intentions in the early years of the Peabody Museum. A question-and-answer period will follow the lecture.

This event is one of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology’s 150th anniversary year public programs.

Free event parking in the 52 Oxford Street Garage.
