Staged Reading of "Bereaved" by Joshua Sobol

When is one truth truer than another? Join Israeli Stage for a one-night-only reading of Joshua Sobol’s latest play, Bereaved, a provocative and searing new drama which invites us to see the world through the eyes of an Israeli couple and a Palestinian couple, both of whom have suffered the tragic loss of a child. About the Play A modern Greek tragedy, Sobol's latest play presents us with a daring, desperate cry for personal, intimate acts of compassion. In a conflict that coldly pits two peoples against one another and demands that we choose between two unacceptable options, Sobol offers us a “third way” in the form of courageous humans who willingly take the first step towards mutual understanding. “The play’s greatness lies in how it presents the feelings on both sides with an equality that does not exist in reality, or at least in the imagined reality found in all the Israeli media.” – Palestinian-Israeli journalist Odeh Bisharat in his Ha’aretz review of the independent Israeli production of Bereaved.   “Joshua Sobol reveals a common humanity on both sides of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He invites us to take a step closer to the heartbreak of this never-ending cycle of war and in doing so, we discover an unexpected capacity for compassion and tolerance.” Guy Ben-Aharon, Founder and Artistic Director of Israeli Stage “The truth is the truth. You may know the truth, you may not. You may hear the truth but not believe it. The truth does not need your belief. The truth exists regardless of our feelings about it. Joshua Sobol’s brilliant Sophoclean tragedy of a play reminds us that only an honest search for what can often be the most unpleasant of truths is all that stands between us and war without end.” – Will Lyman, Actor "Walking in someone else's shoes is usually a good first step, as uncomfortable as that would be.That's what Sobol encourages us to do here."  – Lonnie Farmer, Actor About the Event Featuring Maureen Keiller, Will Lyman, Lonnie Farmer, and Celeste Oliva, the reading of Bereaved is accompanied by a post-show panel discussion featuring a Palestinian, two Israelis, and an American sociologist, moderated by Harvard Law Professor Bob Bordone. A reception with complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks follows the program. About the Playwright Known for controversial work that challenges the dominant narrative, Joshua Sobol – who is by some lights, Israel’s most esteemed playwright – has written over 75 plays, which have been translated and performed in over two dozen countries. Last season, Joshua’s play The Last Act was produced by Israeli Stage where it received coverage in The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Times of Israel, and Forward among others. As Playwright-in-Residence at Israeli Stage, Sobol lectured on theatre as a form of resistance at over half a dozen campuses. Readings of his plays Wanderers, Sinners, ‘David, King’ and Kol’s Last Call have been presented by Israeli Stage. Joshua Sobol is an Oliver Award nominee for Best Playwright, a five-time David’s Harp Award winner, and a recipient of the Golden Medal of the City of Vienna for Excellent Achievement.
